General Instrument (GI), an American electronics pioneer, was established in 1923. Initially based in New York City, the company relocated its headquarters to Horsham, Pennsylvania. GI specialized in semiconductors and cable television equipment, notably contributing to the growth of the cable industry. Throughout its history, GI evolved through acquisitions, notably in the 1950s, broadening its technological capabilities to encompass silicon transistor and semiconductor manufacturing. By the 1990s, GI had become a dominant force in the cable industry. In 1997, the company underwent a major restructuring, splitting into General Semiconductor, CommScope, and NextLevel Systems. NextLevel Systems inherited the cable and satellite TV division, later reverting to the GI name. In 2000, GI was acquired by Motorola, subsequently becoming part of Motorola Mobility and then ARRIS. In 2018, CommScope reacquired GI.
